The Pelham Varsity Puck (PVP) home opening game played host to an exciting event — the raising of the 2017 State Championship banner. No doubt the intimidating symbol of Pelham’s predominance on the ice was enough to coax the Pelicans to hold their own against Carmel, resulting in a 1-1 tie.

With the hanging of the championship banner at the Ice Hutch Arena on November 25, the Pelicans’ place in local history was sealed. Following the big reveal, the 2017-2018 varsity hockey team began their game against Carmel.

In the second period, senior Alex Mclean scored the first goal of the game. However, in the last few minutes of the third period, Carmel sniped a goal past goalie and junior Liam Ronan. When the third period ended, the score remained tied 1-1. After five minutes of overtime, neither team made a winning goal.

Defenseman and junior Connor Evans was on the ice with the current team and several alumni, to view the banner’s assent.

“The raising of the banner is extremely important to me since everyone worked so hard for it,” said Evans.

PVP Coach Witz said, “[I’m] proud, excited, and happy for the school, players, fans and community as it belongs to everyone.”
