Locker Room Controversy at Glover Field

Katy Hart, Junior

Changing in a locker room is never fun, but imagine doing so in space that is too small, uncomfortable, and blatantly inadequate. That’s the reality for female Pelham athletes who have had to change at the Glover Field locker rooms, but that may not be the case for long. There is good news for the spring season, as plans to fix some of these problems is underway.

Senior Anais Leon-Kelly was at the forefront of identifying this problem — that the female locker room space were significantly smaller and lacking in necessities. She also was at the forefront of seeking a solution. She brought these issues to the community’s attention on Instagram, and many other female athletes in Pelham reported the same problems. Anais met with Dr. Champ, the new superintendent, to discuss the situation who assured her that some of the requested changes will be made over the winter season in time for spring sports. Issues discussed at this meeting, such as missing whiteboards, lack of seating, unwanted equipment and missing sanitary bins in the bathroom stalls, will all be addressed. Among the issues to be addressed are adding benches to provide more seating, removing unused equipment, and adding sanitary bins in each stall hope to update the locker room and make them more appealing. These updates will hopefully make the locker rooms fair and more comfortable for all female athletes in both the middle and high schools.

Unfortunately, the space difference between the boy’s and girl’s room is difficult to address. The school district is set to fix what it can to make the locker rooms as fair and comfortable as possible, with larger fixes on the table for the future.
