AccuWeather reported temperatures fluctuating between 19 and 60 degrees within a one week span in January.

When, in recent memory, has PMHS had not one, but two snow days within the first weeks of winter? We were met with odd shifts in temperature shifting from a balmy 65 degrees, to bitter cold levels under 20 and back up again, affecting all in the Pelham School district.

In the week following holiday break, there was a blizzard with a nine inch accumulation of snow. This, in combination with frigid temperatures, led to two snow days for the school district.

In addition to the snow days, students and faculty have been sidelined by the flu and stomach bugs that may be induced by the inconsistent weather. Still, school nurse Kelly Henry cites the number of students out of school due to sickness this winter seems to be lower than in previous years.

The Pelham winter track team that typically practices outside, had to practice in both unusually warm and freezing temperatures this season. When the weather got colder, the track team moved indoors.

Mr. Leighton, winter track team coach, said, “We are lucky to have the support of our Athletic Department and the community to be able to practice once a week at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in NYC.”

The weather, however, still does not deter some from wearing shorts and cropped clothing.

Freshman Lila Caminiti said, “If the weather isn’t under 30 degrees, then I think it is fine to wear shorts and cropped leggings. It’s kind of fun.”
