September 30, 2021
The girls varsity volleyball team had an outstanding performance in their local tournament on September 25. The tournament was located in both the middle and high school gymnasiums, and was sponsored by the Pelham Booster Club. The team went undefeated throughout the day, playing a total of six games. 11 teams played in the tournament, including: Pelham, Rye, Yonkers, Mamaroneck, Port Chester, Scarsdale, Mount Vernon, Rye Neck, New Rochelle, Blind Brook, and R.C. Ketcham. In the finals, Pelham faced off against Mamaroneck in a one-set match. After a heated match, Pelham was able to beat Mamaroneck 25-20, keeping their winning streak alive. After winning the tournament, senior captain, Julia Wall received an award for MVP. Also, Senior Dylan Dejesus and Junior Tiana Richardson received an all tournament team award!
The Pelham Booster Club has sponsored a tournament for the volleyball team every year since 2001. Unfortunately, because of Covid-19 the volleyball team was unable to host a tournament. The Booster Club Truck is provided by the club to serve food and beverages at the tournament. However, no concession stands, including the Booster Club Truck, were allowed due to the indoor nature of the tournament because of Covid-19.
Senior captain Julia Wall said, “We started out a little slow, still managing to win games. We only got better as the day went on.”
Senior Dylan Dejesus said, “We all played extremely well and most importantly worked together strongly as a team. We played a total of eight sets at the tournament, and were able to keep our energy and motivation throughout the entire day. Also, our strong team dynamic, both on and off the court, is a quality that makes our team so successful.”
