Junior Nora Tahbaz made a huge contribution to her team in a successful PMHS varsity volleyball season this fall, scoring 232 points in total, 203 of them kills, 20 aces, and 14 blocks. Tahbaz has been the starting outside hitter since her debut on varsity in her sophomore year, and has consistently showcased her abilities ever since. This year, she decided to give winter track a try as her winter sport.
This is Tahbaz’s first season on the winter track squad, but despite her lack of experience, she has earned a spot at the State Qualifiers in her two main events, the 4×200 meter relay with juniors Emma Lauria and Violet Massie-Vereker freshman Haley Wall with a time of 1:51 seconds, and the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.45 seconds. She also won the Golden Foot Award along with senior Harrison Harvey. Her contributions to the track squad helped Pelham win a Girls League Championship title for the first time in 22 years.
“From the start of the season, Nora continued to get stronger and gain confidence resulting in her being one of the fastest girls in Section 1,” said Mr. Leighton, the coach of the winter track team, “Nora brings her experience from playing a team sport (Volleyball) to track, helping others, giving them encouragement, and making them better. She leads through example and is a fierce competitor.”
A very successful athlete, Tahbaz plans to continue into spring track this year. She was also voted captain of the girls varsity volleyball team for the upcoming 2018 season, marking not only her athletic abilities but her leadership qualities as well.
