Movie Review: Mary Poppins Returns

Lena Massaregli, Senior, Staff Reporter

Fifty-four years after she first hit the big screens, Mary Poppins is finally back! On December 19, Mary Poppins Returns floated down from the clouds and into movie theaters. This time, Mary Poppins, played by A Quiet Place actress Emily Blunt, came back to take care of the Banks children once again. This time, however, Michael and Jane, the series’ original kids have grown up — but they still need a bit of taking care of, along with Michael’s three children John, Annabelle, and George. Mary Poppins takes the three children through an adventure of the impossible and reminds the original children that they need a little magic in their lives. As Poppins reminds them, and us, “Everything is possible, even the impossible.”

Director Rob Marshall worked to bring back the magic that Robert Stevenson created in the 1964 original film. Maintaining the same overall style as the original, Mary Poppins Returns is a big trip down memory lane. However, even though Marshall kept the same animation style, this film has a tale of its own. This time around, Michael Banks, played by Ben Whishaw, is struggling to handle the news that the family home at 17 Cherry Tree Lane is on the verge of being foreclosed. With the help of his sister, Jane, played by Emily Mortimer, Michael attempts to find his father’s bank stocks in a week’s time in order to keep the cherished family home. Assisting Mary Poppins in her quest to help the Banks family is East London lamplighter, Jack, played by Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda. Together, they aid the Banks family and children through this anxious time with the power of imagination.

Although timeless songs such as Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious are nowhere to be heard, a new score by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman (the team who wrote Hairspray) replicates some of the musical magic. Standouts are new songs performed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Emily Blunt like “Introducing Mary Poppins” and “Can You Imagine That,” which refers back to the original’s “A Spoonful of Sugar.”

“The truth is, from the very beginning, we knew how loved the first film was, and we wanted to pay homage to it and make reference to it, but we wanted to make sure that when you started our film, you were watching a new story, a new installment,” Marshall said.

Even though there are new songs and a brand new storyline, the film stands on its own. Mary Poppins Returns is a great tribute to the magical antics of Mary Poppins that children of the ‘60s were entranced by. Filled with music and fantasy, Marshall makes it impossible for movie-goers to be bored. Poppins will keep you on your toes with the new experiences she takes the Banks’ kids through. A light-hearted film guaranteed to make you laugh and smile, Mary Poppins Returns is the perfect movie to go see with family and friends. The film will fill you with joy. Take a trip down memory lane and go see Mary Poppins Returns.
