On  February 3, the New England Patriots faced off against the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. In their third consecutive Super Bowl appearance, the Patriots took the victory with a score of 13-3.

In his eight Super Bowl appearance, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady became the first player in history to have won six Super Bowls. Despite being the lowest scoring Super Bowl game in history, New England wide receiver Julian Edelman was named the game’s Most Valuable Player finishing with ten catches for 141 yards.

With both teams ranked in the top four for points per game during the NFL season, fans and bettors were surprised with such a low scoring game. Despite this, there were still a few memorable moments.

“The highlight of the Super Bowl was the Rams’ Johnny Hekkers’ 65-yard punt because it was, by far, the most exciting thing that happened the whole night,” senior Danny Walsh said.

“The best part of the game was Gronk’s diving catch because it set up the Patriots for their touchdown,” said senior Sam Cork.

The Rams were ranked second in the NFL for points per game with 32.9 points per game. The Patriots were ranked fourth with 27.7 points per game. According to PointsBet, fans and bettors projected the game to be a shootout, with an over/under of 56 points. The low scoring game was attributed to a poor performance by Rams quarterback Jared Goff, who put up a passing rating of 57.9 after putting up a rating of 101.9 during the regular season. The Patriots were led by the best defensive performance in Super Bowl history. They were propelled by Stephon Gilmore, who had a crucial interception in the fourth quarter, as well as defenders Dont’a Hightower and Kyle Van Noy who had key sacks.

Just as fans thought the Rams were beginning to dominate the NFL, the Patriots were able to use veteran players and coaches to win yet another championship.

Though the game itself was lackluster, for some, the Super Bowl is all about the half-time show. In previous years, superstars such as Lady Gaga and Prince provided powerful performances, while Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake provided iconic pop-culture gaffes. This year’s half-time show seemed as tepid as the game itself with a trio of performances by Maroon 5, Big Boi and Travis Scott.  Some thought the show was entertaining.

“I like how they tied Spongebob into the halftime show. That was the funniest part,” said junior Emma Potter.

Still others were underwhelmed.

“I think Big Boi was so random, because who even is that guy?” said senior Sidney Skop.

All in all, Super Bowl 53 seems to have scored as low with the fans as it did in the actual game. In fact, according to NBC Sports, this was the lowest rated game in ten years, garnering nearly five million fewer viewers than last year’s game.
