Critics’ Corner: Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

Zach Long, Managing Editor, Junior

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, directed by Pelham alumni Jason Woliner, won the 2021 Golden Globe Award for the Best Motion Picture comedy or musical. The previous film release of Borat,  directed by Larry Charles in 2006, was also nominated for Golden Globe Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical in the same year. The long awaited sequel finally aired on October 23 on Amazon Prime. The sequel was filmed in secret to surprise unsuspecting fans of BORAT. Starring Sacha Baron Cohen as Kazakhstani journalist, Borat, the fictional reporter risks his life returning to America, this time with his 15 year-old daughter. This hilarious adventure does not hold back on its punch lines and some of the jokes are risqué, to say the least! However, viewers are definitely in for a treat.

At the end of the original film, Borat returns to Kazakhstan, his native country, where he receives harsh punishments for his actions in America. The story begins with Borat’s release from prison after 14 years. In order to redeem himself and his nation he returns to America where he plans to offer Johnny the Monkey to President Donald Trump. However, this idea does not go as well as planned. Not known to Borat, his daughter Tutar, was also shipped to America in the same crate as Johnny the Monkey. Unfortunately, Johnny the Monkey was eaten by Tutar during their trip to America. This sabotages Borat’s plan to redeem his country and now has to use his quick wit to find a solution to the problem.

Borat proceeds to try to give his daughter as a gift to multiple American politicians such as Mike Pence and Rudy Giuliani. With this comedy that ridicules politicians being released right before the presidential election, this movie mixes hilarious comedy and stinging satire.

Audiences will twist with laughter as they follow the  so many twists and turns of Borat’s adventure, which features its fair share of over-the-top cultural stereotypes and gags which might very much made the film a disaster if not handled with its deft comic touch. However, at this point in time, where the world was is so stressed out, pretty much everyone needed a movie like Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. At the end of the day the goal of this movie is to make the viewer laugh, and that is certainly accomplished.

In the original 2006 production, Sacha Baron Cohen was not as recognizable as he is today. Therefore, many of the pranks, jokes, and hilarious moments were able to be pulled off without a hitch. The great thing about these productions is that there are real-life interactions with Americans. These interactions make the movie even funnier since these reactions are actually genuine. Unfortunately Borat Subsequent Moviefilm didn’t have as many as these iconic moments as the original. However, the few that are real truly emphasize how outrageous the film is.

For fans of the original film, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is a must-see. If you haven’t seen the first movie it certainly won’t keep you from enjoying the experience the second one provides. Both films are easily accessible since they are available to stream on Amazon Prime. If you’re looking for a laugh or maybe an escape from these hard times, this movie series may be for you.
