On September 8, Olivia Rodrigo released her sophomore album GUTS. Following the major success of Sour from 2021, fans had high hopes for GUTS and were not disappointed.
Lead single, “vampire” which was released in June, was a huge hit. This hit song has an emotional, pop sound, and really set the tone for Guts. Vampire became a fan favorite and It turned out as a massive success on the charts.
Similar to Sour, this new album has a very teen-angst sound. The production of each song is done very well matching the mood of the tracks very well. Guts follows Rodrigo reminiscing on a past relationship and her regrets on it, similar to her first album Sour. The 12 track album is incredibly catchy and likable, and fans have it constantly on repeat. There are no collaborations, but they would not be needed, as every song is very memorable.
There are many stand out tracks included on this album. “ballad of a homeschooled girl” may sound sad, but it is one of the most upbeat and relatable tracks on the album. Another fun song is “get him back” which is a fan favorite for its amusing lyrics and upbeat tempo.
There are also emotional songs to point out on the album. Songs such as “Making the bed” and “logical” show a more raw and vulnerable side of Rodrigo’s songwriting.
Many fans have pointed out the similarities between Sour and Guts. The songs on both albums are somewhat alike with the sound and “storylines”. However, Guts has definitely shown Rodrigo has majorly improved on her production and songwriting skills.
Guts has reached the successes of Sour with debuting at number 1 on Billboard Top 200 chart and Vampire is still on the Top 100 chart.
Rodrigo is getting ready for the Guts tour which is bound to be a great success and surpass the Sour tour which was in relatively small venues for her celebrity status. Both tours sold out very quickly and were incredibly hard to get tickets to. The Sour tour had a more intimate setting with fun lighting and sound; the Guts tour is bound to bring even more excitement. Guts tour will be in much bigger venues including Kia Forum in LA, Madison Square Garden in New York, and more.
Guts has had an incredible response from the public and proves Rodrigo’s talent as a singer/songwriter. The album is being considered for The Grammy awards, and there is no doubt it will gain some nominations. A few artists Rodrigo music is inspired by and resembles Taylor Swift, Avril Lavigne, and Alanis Morissette. If you are interested in punk rock/pop, this is a great album to listen to.
