Rho Kappa Honor Society hosted their 10th annual history bowl on Monday. The notorious Patriots took first place for the third time in four years.
The history bowl consists of three rounds: two tossup rounds and a bonus round. Teams are made up of four to six people who answer history-based questions of varying difficulty. The team with the most points over the three rounds advances to the next round of competition.
“There was a lot of positive energy and competitive spirit,” said Rho Kappa advisor Marc Sirico. “We had a lot of freshman teams which bodes well for the future of the event. It’s very hard to keep an event that’s now three years going.”
The Patriots and the Brawl Stars competed in the heated final round. The Patriots were composed entirely of seniors, and the Brawl Stars were all underclassmen. Heated competition and misconduct led to a loss of points for the Patriots but ultimately won by a point margin.
“It was kind of hard,” said freshman Adam Lee. “It was fun. It was one of the first times I interacted with the upperclassmen.”
The members of the Patriots are seniors Spencer Conrad, Padraig Pearlman, Sebastian Fisher, Isaac Lief, Luke Reische and Ben Koff. They have also won in both 2022 and 2020.
“I am very proud of our team’s victory,” said Conrad. “We have faced hard teams over our careers in the history bowl, and it is nice to see all of our hard work since freshman year pay off. It feels like just yesterday when I was forming up a team freshman year.”
Pizza and soda were provided by the Pelham PTA. Buzzers were provided by history teacher Jolene Rabuano. The officials of the history bowl consisted of volunteers from Rho Kappa.
“The buzzers donated by Ms. Rabuano added a new element of excitement for the students, ” said Sirico. “There was a lot of help from Rho Kappa members in making questions, recruiting teams and running games. There is a lot that goes into planning beyond just me, and I pulled all the pieces together to make it happen.”
