The story of the Tulsa race massacre is a part of the U.S. dark history that isn’t mentioned even though it happened in 1921 only about 103 years ago from today. In the 1830s when the trail of tears policy was first active from president Andrew Jackson. Former enslaved African Americans were forced to migrate with their Native American masters towards the state that is currently today Oklahoma. They established towns and residential areas to live in while the Native Americans builded a new tribal capital there. As times changed and the institution of slavery ended the former slaves of white owners and native american owners black people of Tulsa Oklahoma stayed. This will increase the population later on when there are more towns and cities created in Oklahoma overtime the African American members of the towns will create businesses which get a lot of support from their community. This made the community economically prosper making more people wanna move to Tulsa which meant more development had to take place in the town. But unfortunately during the 1920s segregation still existed which meant the African Americans were still seen as inferior with the Jim Crow laws such as separate entrances to places and separate bathrooms. On May 31st 1921 a black shoe shiner known as Dick Rowland was working his normal shift but the problem with the shoe shiner place he was working at was there were only bathrooms for white people meaning the closet bathroom was in a different place he would go to the Drexel building. On this day while he was going up the elevator on his way to the bathroom the elevator had stopped because someone had called it, which was 17 year old Sarah Page a white woman. All of the sudden as the elevator opened people nearby heard the scream of Sarah Page nearby and saw Dick Rowland quickly run out of the building while people comforted Sarah Page and tried to find out what had happened to her others called the police and said she was assaulted by Dick Rowland while they were together. This led to the arrest warrant of Dick Rowland who on the next day was arrested, found at his home and brought to custody. When word got out about what happened a group of angry white mob went to the police station where Dick Rowland was being held and demanded to bring Dick Rowland to them so they can lynch him this had caught the attention of the local African American. They wanted to defend Dick Rowland from being lynched sp people who were world war 1 veteran put on their uniforms and brought their guns too because both white and black mobs were armed this create alot of tension between the two groups. Then a member of the white mob attempted to disarm a black man carrying a gun then the first shot was fired resulting in a huge riot, The white mob was furious with had happened and prepared to burn down Tulsa which they did the very next day many people on both sides were killed black members of the community tried attacking back and were successful only temporary Tulsa was completely burned down people were hung dead bodies resulted from shooting or stabbing were all over the street. Not many people know about this tragedy and a lot of schools don’t teach this part of America’s dark history.
