The PMHS orchestra got the holiday season in gear on the evening of December 17, when they performed their winter concert. The performance included a set of songs they have been diligently working on for months under the baton of music teacher Dr. Michele Zanky, and left the crowd in awe.

The musicians opened with the song Paint it Black, written by Rolling Stones’ band members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Next, Athena Woodfin sang an aria from Puccini’s La Boheme, and juniors Matyas Spunberg and Matt Giarrizzo performed a Vivaldi duet. However, it was the performance of Winds of Winter, from the popular television series Game of Thrones, written by Ramin Djawadi, and arranged by Dr. Zanky, that really stole the show.

Dr. Zanky believes that one reason the concert stood out was its unique set list. She explained that the seniors are given a strong say in the works that are performed since it will be their last year in the orchestra.

Dr. Zanky said, “Each concert is completely different because the mix of people is different, as is the personal and musical growth from year to year of each individual.”
