In one of the worst hurricane seasons in American history, hurricane after hurricane tore apart the Caribbean islands and the southern United States, leaving absolute destruction in their wake. Though located far away from the impacted areas, Pelham students felt a need to help the millions of victims. During the first week of October, senior Saul Glist, President of PMHS’ Student Association, organized a hurricane relief week at the school to spread awareness and fundraise for the victims struck by the hurricane. The charity week raised a total of over $3,000.

“I feel we are responsible to do whatever we can when we know they would do the same for us,” said Glist.

As part of the fundraising efforts, the Student Association held a raffle for Mrs. Ricci’s parking spot which was won by senior Quinn Humphrey. The raffle raised over $500.

Ms. Ricci, who kindly gave up her parking space for the raffle, said, “All you have to do is think about all the terrible things that happened that we saw on the news. It made me feel for the affected people, and I just wanted to encourage the students here to be citizens of the world, and to care about their fellow men.”

The student association also organized a student-faculty basketball charity game on October 3. The event turned out to be a huge success as the middle school gym was packed with 320 excited and rowdy attendees.
The action on the court caught the eye of many, with students and faculty battling against one another for the sake of their respective teams. People were in awe to see players such as Assistant Principal Rothstein, math teacher Ms. Newman, and Claude Davis of the IT department showcased their talents on the court.

Varsity players such as seniors Darnell King Marable and Danny Friedman led their team to victory with the use of their fast-paced offense. Although the score of the game fluctuated and was not accurately kept, the students won 60-50.

Competitiveness aside, the money generated from the event was the real winner of the game. Through the strong and hardworking efforts of the Student Association, a total of $2,800 in profit from ticket sales was donated for hurricane relief.

All of the profits made from the Student Association’s Hurricane Relief Week were sent to victims in the southern United States and Puerto Rico.

“Even if people are not able to support the efforts financially, being educated and aware of what is happening can also help a lot.” said Glist.
