2021 Popular Halloween Costumes

Julian Knapp, Staff Reporter, Sophomore

Centuries ago during Halloween, people started wearing eerie outfits to represent themselves as evil fiends or demons. In the past people read verses, sang songs, and participated in folk plays for food. Over time, Halloween traditions have progressed and changed to include handing out candy and dressing up in scary or funny costumes.

The earliest costumes ever worn were ghosts, skeletons, devils, and witches. Otherworldly creatures such as Frankenstein, the Mummy, and Dracula were widely known from folk stories and popular culture. Their influence at the time made them each a favored costume. Now, in 2021, the best Halloween costumes don’t have to be scary, but can be creative, funny, and entertaining.

If in search of hot and trending costumes think of popular movies or television shows. Some favorites are Pokémon trainer, Joe Gardner from the Oscar winning animated film SOUL, and Moira Rose from Schitt’s Creek.  If you prefer pop culture, try being your favorite singer, celebrity, or something trending online. Some examples could be Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, and Dr. Faucci. Another great idea would be a Snapchat filter, sure to catch attention right away. Unique, creative costumes, like a COVID-E-O-GAME, sound like the best ideas for those looking to win a contest. It would be a homemade costume, requiring some thought and ingenuity including a cardboard box made to look like an old video game, with a COVIDgerm as the main character.
