On November 17 District Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Champ announced that she would be taking a personal leave of absence for the duration of December. Champ sent out a letter to students and families of the district announcing this leave.

The Pel Mel reached out to Dr. Champ for a personal statement on her leave, in which she expressed her appreciation for the response of well wishes and her faith in her replacement, Dr. Lauro.

“I am appreciative for the kindness and encouragement of staff and families that have sent wishes of caring and concern,” Champ said.

She also stated that Dr. Lauro’s “deep knowledge of the history and culture of the district” will aid him in his temporary role.

On December 3, Dr. Dennis Lauro also shared a personal announcement with members of the district.

I am proud to be back here and to have this opportunity to serve this school district once again, even if for a short time. With all the challenges facing you each day, like the present pandemic, it is no small feat to maintain a positive attitude and to move ahead!” Lauro said.

While unfortunate circumstances surround the absence of Dr. Champ, the staff and students at Pelham Memorial High School can look forward to having a trusted member of the Pelham schools community as her temporary replacement.
