After a nearly two month absence, Dr. Cheryl Champ has returned as superintendent. Champ had taken a personal leave in early December due to a family emergency, and made her return on January 26.

“I am definitely excited to be back. I missed the people I see on a daily basis and the energy of the schools,” Dr. Champ said.

In the coming weeks she plans to get reacquainted with students and staff, and looks forward to the events of the spring semester.

“Concerts, plays, athletic competitions, service and community projects, Science Research projects, poetry reading, etc. It is truly endless. I’m thrilled that we have been able to bring more of those experiences back in person this year. We may not be 100% back to normal, but we are miles ahead of where we were a year ago,” said Champ.

Dr. Lauro ensured that the transfer of power between himself and Champ was seamless.

Champ said, “I could not have asked for a better person to fill in for me in my absence. Dr. Lauro knows the community, the schools, the staff, and the job. He jumped back in and led with an incredible amount of energy in a way no one else could have,” Dr. Champ said.

Dr. Lauro, who served as PUFSD’s superintendent from 2008 to 2012, has once again returned to retirement.
He looks forward to traveling and exploring new interests.

“I am studying Portuguese! I spend at least an hour a day on that, and I like to read and of course, like most people, I have my favorite Netflix series I enjoy watching in the evening.”

Lauro is well known in the district, and transitioned back into the role with grace
