West Side Story, originally filmed in 1961, is recognized as a great success and remembered as a classic. It won the Best Picture Oscar that year. Why then do a remake? Well, that’s exactly what Steven Speilberg has done. The newest version, released December 10, has been updated to deal with still relevant topics such as romance, rivalry, racism, and division in greater depth. It features newcomer Maddie Ziegler as Maria, and Ansel Elgort as Tony as the lovers in this updated, musicalretelling of Romeo & Juliet. For those looking for something to draw your attention, and keep you in suspense, put this  film on your watch-list.

Set during the early 1960’s in San Juan Hill and Lincoln Square, ethnic tensions between the neighborhood’s White and Puerto Rican residents rise as they fight over space. It is  abundantly clear that each feels  there is only space for one group. This idea of division and tension between race and personal beliefs, is one that this film emphasizes repeatedly. It is a theme that, unfortunately, remains prevalent decades later. That Tony is aligned with one group and Maria with the other only adds to the tension.

The movie was shot in New York City. Although this is a small detail, it enables the film to use the city in a way that accurately portrays the life of immigrants during the era. The city itself becomes a character. Though a musical, it deals with tough topics and important, ongoing issues realistically, avoiding cliché.

Another aspect of the film that others may find exciting is the attention to detail. For one, the choreography and cinematography particularly stand out. Each “gang” has their own style of dancing. The newly arrived Puerto Rican Sharks  dance side by side with the American Jets each exploding with defined movement, and although rivals, together their dancing is unifying.

Overall the movie is not one to miss. Although it is a remake it is extremely well done and is worth the watch. Viewers who have seen the original film will likely enjoy the remake with a few changes that perhaps give this film a refreshing take. “West Side Story” is now available to stream on Disney Plus and HBO Max.
