Rebecca Nicholas, winner of every tip off in her high school career has played on the Varsity team for the past three years of highschool and is graduating in her final year here at Pelham Memorial High School. This 2023-2024 season, the girls have a record of 12-4 and are clearly powering through the season, with wild wins and comebacks from last year.
Rebecca has lived in Pelham her entire life, getting into basketball by watching games with her father when she was younger and has been playing ever since elementary school on a team like Pelham Recreation which is a team that many younger Pelham students play on and grow their love for the sport.
On Friday February second, the girls team took a big win and beat RYE 45-41, ending a 15- year streak of winning against Pelham. What makes this special is that Becca’s goal of making it to the playoffs or even making it to the county center is looking very attainable as they beat a large powerhouse in our section. Also, it is special because Pelham’s opponents have been put on notice that the Pelham Girls’ Varsity Basketball is here to stay.
By playing this sport she has been able to make so many new friends and amazing memories, especially since she attributes the wins and improvement of the team overall to “the team chemistry as a whole [which] is amazing,” Nicholas said. She is so proud that she is getting the chance to play with such young and talented girls and she has been really centered in making this the most impactful and memorable year yet.
Since Becca has been playing on the team, she has come very far, becoming a leader on her team and gaining confidence the more she plays and the more experience she acquires . “Being an important player on the court fills me with a sense of pride and accomplishment since I get to contribute my abilities and dedication to the team’s success” Nicholas commented. Functioning as a taller player Nicholas plays as center making her an outstanding defensive and offensive player, with the goal on the court being a rebounder, someone who plays hard defense, runs the floor, picks and rolls quickly to the basket and blocks shots.
“I want to leave a legacy of hard work, leadership, and inspiring my teammates to reach their full potential both on and off the court. I want to be remembered as a great teammate, player, captain, and especially a friend to everyone on the team.” Becca exclaimed inspirationally!
