The girl’s hockey team has finally started playing this year. They have two teams, one developmental and one varsity team. Coached by Stacy Wierl, the team’s coach for the past three years. The varsity captains Eileen Mazzaro and Stella Schlumbom have already led the team to win their first two scrimmages and bring wins back to the school. The team is looking for a lot of success this year with their two teams being filled with very hard-working athletes. Hopefully, theft can fight through the whole season and reach their goal to win sectionals this year. Senior Greta Fear said, “It’s been a great community to grow with for the past four years, and it’s exciting seeing it shift further into a varsity sport. I love seeing the team being able to up the intensity, especially at our last tournament in Lockport, NY. We’ve been trying to make girls’ hockey on the high school level more accessible, and we’ve definitely done so. It’s so heartwarming to see the original goal being carried out.” The developmental team is also a hockey team but what they do is learn the fundamentals of hockey like how to skate, and how to shoot. A player on the team said, “The team is like being a part of a second family and knowing there are always people that have your back, everyone is always helping each other and getting better and improving.” The developmental team has been working hard since the beginning of the season to learn the skills of hockey and hopefully become the new face of the varsity team next year with all the skills and talents of great hockey players. The varsity team is 2-3 so far (1-2 in the regular season) and the team went to Buffalo, NY for an overnight tournament where they bonded together on the trip and put their best effort forward against tough teams.
