The Heisman Trophy race this season has been one of the most fun and unpredictable ones in a while. A few players have put up huge numbers, others have created big “Heisman moments”, and some turn close games into statement victories. As the season gets closer to the end, three players clearly stand out from the rest as the top contenders to win the Heisman.
- Fernando Mendoza-QB (Indiana): Fernando Mendoza has been the surprise star of the season. Indiana wasn’t supposed to be anywhere near the spotlight, but Mendoza completely changed the direction of Indiana’s football program. He’s been calm, accurate, and very clutch in big games. What really pushes him to the front of the Heisman race is how valuable he is to his team. Without him, Indiana isn’t even close to competing. He’s not just putting numbers up, he’s also lighting an entire program.
- Julian Sayin- QB (Ohio State): Julian Sayin came into the year with huge expectations, and he’s lived up to every bit of the hype. The Freshman has been exactly who Ohio State wanted at their QB position. Just like Fernando Mendoza he is calm under pressure, smart with the ball in his hand, but most of all he performs in big games. For example Ohio State went into Michigan, their biggest rival and he had an amazing game, and Ohio State ended up winning 27-9. He shows up when the spotlight is bright, and that’s exactly what voters look for. If Ohio State keeps rolling, his chances of winning are just as high as anyone’s.
- Jeremiyah Love- RB (Notre Dame): Jeremiyah Love has been the spark of Notre Dame’s offense. He’s explosive, patient, and always seems one step ahead of the defenders. Love isn’t just a running back who racks up yards, he’s the kind of player who changes the entire feel of the game. Whether he’s breaking off a long run or keeping drives alive, he’s been the heartbeat of Notre Dame’s attack. If he continues to put up big numbers down the stretch, he could easily push his way into the top spot of the Heisman conversation.
