As the season begins, the boys’ varsity swim team is focused on improving times and building consistency. With a very small roster, the team faces challenges when they go against some of the biggest teams in Section 1. In high school swimming, scoring is heavily influenced by the number of athletes a team can put into each event. Larger teams can fill every lane, giving them multiple chances to place and collect points. With such a small roster, the boys’ team simply can’t match that volume. Even if their swimmers post strong individual times and win their events, they’re often out-scored by teams that can enter twice as many competitors. However, they are determined to make up the difference.
The team, unfortunately, fell short in their first meet against the reigning Section 1 champions, Mamaroneck. However, in their next meet against North Rockland, their finishes improved. The team won their 200 Medley Relay, dropping from their season best. They also had multiple top 3 finishers with Ethan Githaibi in the 200 IM and 100 fly, Gio Polenzani in the 200 IM, Oliver Ashlock in the 50 freestyle and 100 fly, and Conor Waters in the 100 free and 100 back. Evan Kaplan got the team their first win in the 100 breaststroke. Unfortunately, North Rockland walked away with the win, but the boys’ swim team is only improving.
