After an immensely successful regular season, the Pelham girls’ varsity basketball team made it all the way to the county center to compete in the Section One championship finals. Even after competing at Olympics all day, the girls traveled up to White Plains and gave it their all against Tappan Zee, but unfortunately came up short. Although the team did not get the end outcome they were hoping for, they were still grateful for the experience to get to compete at the county center for a section championship. After her first year playing on the team, junior Courtney Gilmarin said, “It was such a great opportunity to play at the county center, and play in the section championship.” This was not the team’s first time making it to the county center. The past three seasons have undoubtedly been historic for the girls’ basketball team. Last year, they made it all the way to section finals, and the year before that, semi-finals. Gilmartin also added, “Our repeated appearance at the section championship shows how focused we are as a team and how good we have gotten.” After multiple appearances, it is apparent that the team’s success will continue through the next couple of years.
To get to the county center took a lot of work and triumph during the beginning of the playoffs and the regular season. In their semifinal win against Hen Hud, 64-52, Sophomore Brooke Green led the team in points with 24 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 steals. As for the rest of the team, other players with high stats include Charlotte Gomprecht with 11 points and 6 rebounds, Colleen Sheehy with 10 points, Arden Keough with 6 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, and Emma Namba with 5 points. Furthermore, the team won the league championship title against Bronxville 50-38. In the game, Green broke the school record of rebounds in a single season with 225.
Their hard work and continued dedication throughout the season were just a small part of the team’s success. When asked about how the team interacted off the court, Gilmartin said, “We are all so close. We would have team bonding dinners and use those to get ready for the upcoming big games.” Their tight bond outside of basketball helped build their chemistry during gameplay. They fed off each other’s energy, and were motivated by the common goal of getting a section championship win.
