With the playoffs only around a month away, it is clear that the end of the NBA Regular Season is rapidly approaching. Although there is still a month left to play, there is still room to consider each team’s body of work up to this point. This season has been filled with twists, turns, injuries, and controversies. When attempting to predict what’s to come, there is no better place to start than with an analysis of the past.
Coming into the season as the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder had an immeasurable amount of pressure on them to continue their dominance. Despite battling nagging injuries to key players, OKC has continued to be the team to beat in the West. Even with other teams putting all their energy in toppling them, the Thunder have remained strong, and currently sit as the number one seed in the Western Conference. Not only has Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continued his MVP level play, but the emergence of role players such as Ajay Mitchell and Jared McCain have helped keep the team afloat. However, this is not to say that OKC has simply cruised along, facing no challenges from the rest of the league. In fact, the Thunder have struggled greatly against the up-and-coming San Antonio Spurs this season. With a 4-1 against the 2025 champions, the Spurs have certainly surprised those who doubted their experience. Led by a surging Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio appears to be a well-oiled machine. With contributions from rookie Dylan Harper and an excellent bench, the Spurs have played with a level of efficiency that would make former coach Gregg Popovich proud. Outside the top two teams, the rest of the Western Conference standings are similar to last year, with familiar faces such as the Timberwolves, Rockets, and Nuggets all battling for higher seeding. The Western Conference is fiercely competitive this year. This competition even extends to the teams at the bottom, fighting for the highest lottery odds possible. While the Pelicans and Jazz have retaken their spots at the bottom of the conference, they are joined by some new faces. Far away from 2022’s “Light the Beam” season, the Sacramento Kings are the picture of a dysfunctional organization. Even with notable players such as Zach LaVine and DeMar Derozan, the team has been unable to get anything going. Similarly, the Dallas Mavericks have had a challenging season as well. Although number one overall pick Cooper Flagg has played at a high level, Dallas has stayed near the bottom of the standings the whole season. With how volatile the West has been in recent years however, there is no way of telling what will happen come playoff time.
When compared to the Western Conference, the Eastern Conference’s standings are much more shocking. After facing a crushing defeat in the 2025 NBA Finals, the Indiana Pacers have fallen to the bottom of the East. However, this is due in large part to them missing their X-Factor in Tyrese Haliburton. In spite of the losing season, the Pacers have shown that they are looking to the future by trading for a rising star in Ivica Zubac. They are joined at the bottom by the Brooklyn Nets, who have also shown that they are in the midst of a rebuild. With 5 first-round picks in the 2025 NBA Draft, the Nets are a team full of young talent that has had issues putting it all together. With new teams joining the bottom of the conference, it is no surprise that many teams have improved upon their placements from the 2024 season. These rising teams include the Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors, and most surprisingly, the Charlotte Hornets. Coming into the season with low expectations, the Hornets have certainly put the league on notice. With key contributors such as rookie Kon Knueppel, LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller, the Hornets have a high chance of playing spoiler to a top seed in the east. On the topic of the top seeds in the East, the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons have both outperformed expectations. After Jayson Tatum went down with an Achilles tear in the 2025 playoffs, many expected the Celtics to be a middling team without his help. However, with Jaylen Brown playing at an MVP level, the Celtics have managed to remain a potential title contender. Now that Jayson Tatum has returned, it is safe to assume that the team will continue to trend upwards. For the Pistons, their dominance has come with Cade Cunningham working as the team’s engine. Holding the best record in the league at multiple points this season, the Pistons are a scrappy team who could beat anyone come playoff time. Other eastern stalwarts such as the New York Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers are also in the mix for deep playoff runs. With the rise of many young teams, it seems that the old guard of the Eastern Conference is due for a shakeup.
Although the regular season gives a good look at each team’s strengths and weaknesses, the playoffs are another entity entirely. Whether it be the Miami Heat’s miraculous run to the finals in 2023 or the Pacers improbable victories in 2025, the NBA playoffs have shown that nothing is guaranteed in sports. Thus, Fans should remain at the edges of their seats as April approaches.
