Pelham Memorial High School offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including clubs concerning science, mathematics, sportClub of the Issue:
Latin Clubs, and foreign languages. Latin Club is the Pel Mel’s Club of the Issue. The Latin Club gives kids an opportunity to learn more about Roman culture and the language itself. The club’s advisor is Mr. Scott, and it meets on Thursdays in Room 233.

Roman traditions and celebrations are a focal point of the club. Anyone interested will be happy to know that celebrating Roman holidays is very important to the group as well. Kids should consider joining because it appeals to people of all different skill levels and ages. Newcomers will be introduced to the basic rules and fundamentals of the language, while experienced members will expand their knowledge through fun activities and creative assignments. This includes enjoyable, yet informative games like Jeopardy and short writing activities.

Although many perceive Latin to be an outdated language, Mr. Scott speaks to its pertinence, “[Latin] helps build the understanding of English word origin and is useful for the SAT,” explained Mr. Scott.

Knowing and understanding the roots of the English vernacular is extremely valuable. In fact, over 60 percent of English words have Greek or Latin roots. We can make meaningful connections between English and other languages, including Latin.

Ella Stern, a PMHS student and dedicated president of Latin Club, said, “All students at PMHS should join [Latin Club] because it gives people the unique chance to learn more about Latin and ancient Roman culture in a fun, engaging and pressure-free way”

The presidential triumvirate of Ella, Rachel Brewer and Sophia McSpedon is a group that is passionate about the club and encourages kids to attend at least one meeting. If you’re interested, don’t be afraid to go! Hail Caesar!
