As the NFL enters into the latter half of its season, anticipation has begun to build for the upcoming playoffs. Each team still in contention is fighting every week for a chance to secure their spot in the postseason. While it’s impossible to guarantee how each team currently in the playoffs will perform, predictions can still be made based on their histories and current seasons. No team in the NFL is perfect, and each have their own respective strengths and weaknesses. However, some teams are more poised to contend for a championship this season than others. Through an examination of each division leader’s characteristics, it becomes possible to make an informed prediction about who will be competing for the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl 60.
The NFC is hotly contested, with multiple teams vying for the number one seed. Currently, the Chicago Bears stand atop the conference. However, the Bears in their current state have multiple roster holes that hamper their championship aspirations. The strengths for the Bears are clear, with their defense leading the league in takeaways and their strong running game. However, the Bears are young and quite inexperienced. There is no way of telling if quarterback Caleb Williams can rise to the occasion in the most high pressure scenarios. While Williams has made many timely plays this season, his accuracy has been shaky. If teams load the box and force Caleb Williams to consistently beat them from the pocket, Chicago may run into trouble. This is paired with a defense that has allowed the 27th most yards per game, which teams may seek to exploit. Due to these issues, the Bears may be one year away from truly contending. Despite leading the NFC East, the Eagles are not the same powerhouse that they were in the 2024-2025 season. Although they have a strong record of 8-4, their wins have largely come in spite of poor offensive performances. Philadelphia’s defense has stood at the middle of the pack. However, they have given up a consistently large amount of rushing yards a game, which teams such as Chicago have exploited. While the defense has been serviceable, Philadelphia’s offense has been largely critiqued throughout the season. Fans and analysts alike have pointed to both running back Saquon Barkley’s drop-off in performance coming off a 2,000 rushing yard season, and the lack of production from star receiver A.J. Brown. While it is possible the Eagles return to form in the playoffs, it will take a change in offensive play calling. Offensive Coordinator Kevin Patullo must make sweeping changes to his scheme to avoid losing his job at the end of the season. Finally, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hope to fend off the momentum the Carolina Panthers have been building in order to cinch the division. Early in the season, the Buccaneers stood at a strong 6-2, with Baker Mayfield receiving MVP buzz. However, 3 losses in a row with uninspired offensive performances have led to Tampa Bay being in a position to potentially be usurped by the Carolina Panthers. Each division leader in the NFC has weaknesses holding them back, with only one team standing above the rest.
The standings in the AFC have largely come as a surprise this season. This can be seen through the division leaders, with young teams such as the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots beating out expected powerhouses in the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs. When looking at the NFL through a purely statistical standpoint, the New England Patriots stand as Super Bowl favorites. Quarterback Drake Maye has taken a leap in his second year, and serves as one of the MVP favorites. However, a large portion of New England’s wins have come against weak teams. While they beat the Bills and Buccaneers, it remains to be seen how this team will respond to the level of competition in the playoffs. There is potential for their youth and inexperience to be exploited by a more experienced team. A similar statement can be made for the Denver Broncos. Denver’s defense has been nothing short of elite this season, with them ranking in the Top 5 in yards allowed per game and leading the league in sacks. Their defense has largely been keeping the team afloat, as Denver’s offense is inconsistent. Quarterback Bo Nix has played poorly in many close games against weak opponents, such as his two interception performance against Las Vegas in Week 10. Comparatively, the Jacksonville Jaguars have similar issues to the Denver Broncos. While their defense has been surprisingly solid, quarterback Trevor Lawrence has experienced stretches of both high-level and low-level play. When the playoffs come, it remains to be seen what version of Trevor Lawrence and Bo Nix each team will receive. This inconsistency makes it hard to guarantee enough playoff success for a Super Bowl appearance. This leaves the Baltimore Ravens as the last division leader in the AFC. Baltimore’s defense has certainly improved from early in the season, where they were one of the league’s worst units. However, they have played inconsistently, highlighted by their 5 turnover game against the Bengals on Thanksgiving Day. Despite the dominance shown by New England and Denver throughout the season, their inexperience holds them back. There is still time for the standings to change in the AFC playoff picture, so each division leader may not hold their spot for long
With each division leader examined, this leaves two teams that have the most potential for a Super Bowl Experience. These teams are the Los Angeles Rams and the Buffalo Bills. The Rams have been dominant this season, with Quarterback Matthew Stafford standing as a comfortable MVP favorite for a large portion of the season. Although their recent loss to Carolina has introduced uncertainty into their future, their strong offense and defense cannot be overlooked. Their 2025-2026 team has shades of their Super Bowl Winning 2021 team, with a true number one receiver in Puka Nacua and a dominant linebacker in Byron Young. The value of quarterback Matthew Stafford’s experience cannot be overstated, as he has been shown to rise to the occasion in important scenarios. Despite a shakier 2025 season, the Buffalo Bills should still be seen as one of the top teams in the NFL. While reigning MVP Josh Allen has not played up to his standard, he still has many strong outings, with a particularly memorable 6 touchdown performance against Tampa Bay. Throughout Josh Allen’s playoff history, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have stood as his greatest obstacle to reaching a Super Bowl. With the Chiefs out of the playoffs at the current moment, this may be the year the Bills capitalize on Josh Allen’s prime. The Bill’s playoff experience, and quarterback Josh Allen’s ability to will the team to wins, may be all that is needed for the Bills to claw their way to a Super Bowl over some of the younger teams within the AFC.
Ultimately, the predictions may not reflect what happens during the 2025-2026 NFL Season’s playoffs. As the season winds down, it remains to be seen how each team will respond to the challenges they are faced with.
